The active ingredients in hemp and marijuana are called cannabinoids. The most widely recognized cannabinoids are cannabidiol (CBD) and delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Hemp-based products are the primary source of CBD supplements used by pet-owners, and these supplements lack the higher levels of THC that cause the “high” sensation seen with marijuana use.

Can CBD help my dog?

CBD is thought to have anti-anxiety and anti-inflammatory effects. The use of these compounds to treat various conditions in dogs is still in the very early stages of study. Currently, there is no definitive evidence that such supplements are effective, but very few harmful side effects have been reported with the use of CBD, or hemp-based, products.

There are a lot of testimonials about the positive effects people have observed in their pets after using CBD supplements. Owners of older animals with chronic pain, who do not tolerate traditional oral pain medications, appear to be the biggest advocates of these supplements. They see an improvement in their pet’s comfort and mobility using CBD products in combination with, or in place of, their other medications. Many owners have reported that the supplements have improved the appetites of pets with chronic, end-stage diseases such as cancer, heart failure or kidney failure. People also reported improvement in conditions such as cognitive dysfunction, anxiety and inflammatory bowel disease.

Are there any harmful effects of these supplements?

Dogs and humans both have cannabinoid receptors, but dogs and humans react to these compounds very differently. Dogs have a greater number of receptors, making them much more sensitive to the effects of THC. The number of pets seen for marijuana toxicity has continued to rise as pets accidentally ingest or are administered medical marijuana. This can cause signs such as stumbling, depression, and severe lethargy, but unlike humans, the symptoms can last from 18 to 36 hours.

How do I choose a CBD supplement?

There are several companies who sell products containing CBD. Sold as treats, capsules, or oils, they are classified by the FDA as supplements rather than drugs. Products that the FDA considers to be “drugs” undergo strict testing and oversight to ensure that there are no contaminants and that the advertised “strength”, or amount of ingredient, is in the final product. Supplements are not regulated by the FDA like drugs so there is very little oversight of the quality of the products sold to pet owners.

When selecting a product containing cannabinoids, such as CBD, take the time to research the company and their product(s). Some companies, such as Canna Companion and Treatibles, will submit their products to third party testing to validate their ingredients and the levels of CBD. Auburn University’s College of Veterinary Medicine Clinical Pharmacology Lab offers cannabinoid therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM). This information can help veterinarians determine if your pet’s supplement is providing appropriate, therapeutic doses of CBD. Information about this testing is available on their website.

I recommend that you talk to your veterinarian before starting any supplement. Veterinarians in all states are prohibited from prescribing medical marijuana, but hemp-based CBD supplements are legally available over the counter. Veterinarians know that a multi-modal approach to chronic disease has additional benefits than medications alone. Although CBD has been shown to be a safe compound for people and canines alike, your veterinarian can help guide you to the best combination of therapies to address your dog’s individual needs.

1. CBD May Offer Significant Benefits To Brain Health In Aging Dogs

CBD has shown the ability to support normal cellular function and promote healthy aging through mitochondrial support.

In addition, CBD is currently being studied for its apparent antipsychotic, anti-nausea, and anticonvulsant, and anti-inflammatory benefits. The anti-inflammatory benefi ts, in particular, may offer the most benefit to the brain and aging.

2. Studies Show Can Help Relieve Joint Pain, Reduce Stiffness, and Improve Mobility

CBD oil naturally helps reduce inflammation in all parts of the body. The same endocannabinoid receptors that work together to relieve anxiety also target areas in the body experiencing pain due to inflammation, damaged nerves, and injury.

Many holistic veterinarians recommend CBD oil to senior dogs suffering from joint pain. While it isn’t a cure for all joint issues, it can ease the inflammation caused by worn down cartilage, and it helps dogs feel better and stay active. It’s also used to alleviate painful symptoms of intestinal inflammation, and it’s often administered after surgery and during injury recovery to invoke the immune system for faster healing. 2

3. It Helps Dogs With Anxiety

The life of a dog might not seem stressful, but many pups suffer from different kinds of situational and behavioral anxiety. CBD oil targets the endocannabinoid system to help the body balance emotions. The endocannabinoid system is the same in all mammals. It’s comprised of spaced-out receptors that communicate to keep the body balanced. CBD oil works to initiate chemical transmissions between receptors that help the dog feel calm in times of stress. Pet owners use it for dogs with separation anxiety, phobias, and general anxiety.

4. CBD Can Increase Appetite

Food and nutrients are essential for a healthy aging dog, and a good diet is especially important when that dog is battling a serious illness. They need food to give their body the strength to fight back, but many health conditions shut down appetite. When they can’t eat, they become weak and are even more vulnerable to whatever kind of damage their illness is causing.

CBD oil works to counter this effect by stimulating appetite. 2 Whether it’s nausea or a general weariness that’s keeping the dog from eating, CBD oil triggers the sensation of hunger. When the dog eats without feeling sick and vomiting the food back up, they absorb much-needed nutrients to help their body stay strong and healthy.

Using CBD oil to alleviate pain and promote overall well-being for your dog is something more and more people are catching on to. There’s still a lot scientists don’t know, but initial studies on humans show promising potential. More studies focusing on CBD oil for dogs are currently in the works, and dog owners and holistic veterinarians await results to learn just how far CBD oil can take the future of veterinary medicine.

CBD Is Legal In All 50 States And Will Not Make Your Dog “High”

The first concern people have for administering CBD oil to their pets is exposing them to potential toxins related to cannabis. While the cannabis plant is most commonly associated with marijuana, hemp is its safer cousin. Unlike marijuana, hemp is not psychoactive, which means it can’t make you (or your dog) high. 2

It’s the tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) in marijuana that gives people a high. CBD oil from hemp, however, is cannabis that contains less than 0.3% THC (for pets we recommend choosing a product that is 100% THC free). CBD oil has all the therapeutic properties of cannabis without the mind-altering characteristics of THC. There are no toxins related to CBD oil from hemp, and there’s no risk of overdosing. 3

The changing legality of cannabis is hard to keep track of, but when it comes to CBD oil from hemp, it’s easy. Unlike marijuana, hemp is legal in all 50 states. 1 As a hemp product, that means CBD oil is legal, too. Medical marijuana is legal in about half of states, but with negligible amounts of THC, those rules don’t apply to hemp. It’s perfectly legal to buy and possess CBD oil as long as it’s obtained from hemp and has less than 0.3% THC.

8 CBD Products Scientifically Proven to Be Best for Senior Dogs

Some of the Best Pain Management and Relief Solutions for Senior Dogs

It’s important to consult your pet’s veterinarian with any medical concerns, and before making changes or adding supplements to your pet’s health plan.

Dogs are truly man’s best friend. But as they get older, their health might start to decline. You might be surprised that cannabidiol (CBD) products could be the answer to your aging dog’s problems. There are many health benefits of using CBD on senior dogs. You’ll be relieved to know that CBD could be used to treat various conditions of your beloved pet.

What is CBD?

CBD is an organic compound from the cannabis plant. While it is a type of cannabinoid, it does not cause any psychoactive effects. Only tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, is responsible for that.

Many studies have been conducted to explore how CBD oil could have a number of health benefits, both in humans and in dogs. Over the years, studies have found that CBD could possibly help humans with:

  • Anxiety and stress relief
  • Inducing sleep for those who suffer from insomnia
  • Reducing seizure frequency for epileptic patients
  • Reducing inflammation
  • Chronic pain relief symptoms relief

The effects of CBD on humans are similar to its effects on dogs, in that it can help to relieve pain and reduce seizure frequency. Research has shown that CBD can help provide substantial pain relief in dogs experiencing osteoarthritis, provided that the CBD is given to the dog twice a day. There are also no worries about dogs “getting high,” because these CBD products only contain traces of THC, and are guaranteed safe. While further research is still needed to understand all the effects of CBD, manufacturers are already using CBD oil to address medical conditions in both humans and animals.

How Could CBD Help Senior Dogs?

If you are a dog lover, then you already know that older dogs tend to suffer from a variety of health problems. It’s no secret that aging dogs could experience cognitive decline, joint pains, and even depression.

Unfortunately, their age may sometimes aggravate previous conditions or make it hard for them to recover from injuries. Problems like these will cause stress for you and other owners as you scramble to find a treatment that’s both effective and affordable.

Studies reveal that CBD could have a myriad of health benefits when administered to dogs and cats in appropriate amounts. It could be used as:

An anti-inflammatory for weak muscles and joints

An antiemetic for nauseating dogs

A painkiller for various injuries

Prophylaxis for seizures and anxiety attacks

Whether you want to treat a specific condition or it becomes necessary to boost mobility and health, consult your veterinarian today about purchasing CBD-infused treats. The dosage depends on many factors like your dog’s weight, age, size, and medical history. So make sure to consult your vet first.
