A CBD Dosage for Dogs: How Much Should I Give My Dog? Still not sure how to figure out how much CBD you should give your dog? CBD Oil Dosage Chart for Dogs and Cats

The general rule of thumb for a starting dosage for dogs is 1mg of CBD per 10 pounds of animal weight, twice a day.

This is considered a medium dosage starting point. The chart at the bottom shows how many drops are needed to give this starting dosage based on Max & Neo CBD oil bottles which come in 30ml bottles.

A full dropper is 1ml and contains about 20 drops. You can increase your dog’s dosage up to 2-3 times the amount if you are not seeing any results.

How many mg are in each drop of my CBD oil bottle?

An easy way to figure this out with any bottle is that you can assume that a 30ml (1oz) bottle, which is the size most brands sell, contains about 900-950 drops. For simplicity, we round this up to 1000 drops and we would still be 90-95% accurate.

So if there are 1000 drops in a bottle, and the bottle is a 1000mg bottle.

The math is: 1000mg divided by 1000drops = 1mg/drop

If you have a 250mg bottle, then there is 0.25mg per drop, and so on.

How many drops are in my dropper?

If you are tired of counting out 40 drops, then realize that most droppers will contain 20 drops when you give the bulb a regular squeeze.

A full dropper doesn’t mean that the liquid goes all the way to the top. If you notice the dropper on the right, 1ml is only about 60% of the way up the dropper.

If your dropper doesn’t have the ml marks, just know that 1ml is about 60% up the stem.

CBD Dosage for Dogs: How Much Should I Give My Dog?

Still not sure how to figure out how much CBD you should give your dog?

As a team of CBD aficionados and pet lovers obsessed with their puppies, we’ll be more than happy to help you find the right dose of cannabidiol (CBD) for your furry friend.

And if you’re here for the first time wondering why on earth we would even consider giving CBD to a dog, here’s a quick reminder:

Dogs and cats have an endocannabinoid system, too – just like humans.

That being said, CBD, a powerful compound found in the cannabis plant, shows great potential as an alternative form of treatment for dogs, cats, and other pets that are struggling with a range of health conditions.

Finding the right dose of CBD can be tricky, as there are plenty of factors that can determine the effects it will have on your dog or cat.

We’ll cover all you need to know about dosing CBD for pets and walk you through the best dosage guidelines for different forms of CBD consumption.

Things to Consider Before Giving CBD to Your Dog

Figuring out the right CBD oil dosage for your dog can be a hard nut to crack, especially for pet owners who are just getting started with CBD for pets.

We’ll use dogs as an example because that’s where we have the most experience; however, the same guidelines apply to cats and other (mammalian) pets.

There are three essential factors to take into consideration prior to buying CBD for your pet:

1. Consumption Method

One of the factors that determine how much CBD you will give your dog is the type of product you use, along with the brand you’re using.

CBD products for dogs come in 4 main forms:

  • CBD and Hemp oil
  • Capsules
  • Topical rubs
  • Treats (edibles)

CBD and hemp oils are by far the best option for dogs as they offer the highest bioavailability. This means that less CBD is needed to produce the effects you want.

However, not every dog will like the distinct taste of CBD oil, so if that’s the case, CBD dog treats would do the trick.

Not only will they taste better – imagine flavors like Chicken & Bacon or Roasted Duck – but they also come with a fixed CBD dose.

This way, you know exactly how much CBD you’re giving your dog.

However, there’s one downside to using CBD dog treats:

They’re much slower.

The cannabinoids in the treats need to pass through your dog’s digestive system to make it into the bloodstream. This means the effects will have a slower onset time than oils and your dog may receive less CBD overall.

The same applies to CBD capsules for dogs, but capsules just aren’t as enjoyable for the dogs as the treats.

The benefits of capsules, however, are that they have a higher fixed dose, and are more reliable in the level of effects they’ll produce.

2. Your Pet’s Size

It’s no surprise that the CBD dosage for vary depending on your dog’s size. But how do I determine what dose is correct?

The general rule is that larger dogs need more CBD to experience the effects than smaller puppies. Some brands provide their own dosage charts based on the weight of your dog. This makes dosing easier from the start.

Keep reading to learn specific dosage guidelines depending on the size of your dog.

3. The Severity of Your Dog’s Condition

Finally, keep in mind that your dog’s condition can also affect how much CBD should you give him/her.

The more severe the condition, the higher the dose they’ll likely need to alleviate the discomfort.

If you want to supplement your dog with CBD oil, low doses will usually suffice, but for anxiety or joint pain, you’ll need to increase the dosage and observe the effects until you hit the sweet spot.

General CBD Dosage Guidelines For Dogs

For general supplementation or mild conditions, the exact amount of drops in a CBD oil to meet the estimated dosage will vary between products.

In general, 2-4 drops taken two to four times a day are recommended.

You can also adjust the dosage, based on the size of your pet and his/her condition we’ve just talked about.

A CBD capsule, in turn, will contain between 5-20 mg of CBD each. The dose of encapsulated CBD is around 1 tablet taken once or twice per day.

As for pet treats, they will vary in concentrations of CBD.

Always check if your CBD company provides dosing instructions at the back of the package. If it does, it’s best to follow the instructions.

Actually, regardless of the product you use, we always recommend following the dosage instructions that came with it and based on this, adjust the dose as needed.

We recommend starting at the low end of the dose, and increasing gradually once you know how your dog will respond.

How to Figure Out How Much CBD You Should Give to Your Dog By Size

To make it easy for you, we’ll break down exactly how to choose the right dose for your dog based on their size (measured in weight).

Some people prefer to use a very small dose, no matter what size their dog is and working up from there.

A rough starting dose to do this is 1 mg.

This allows you to gradually work your way up the optimal dose without wasting too much CBD oil in the process.

Even large dogs are about ⅓ the size of average humans, so considering that in humans, the jumping-off point is around 1-3 mg, the above figure makes sense.

To begin with, let’s discuss how much CBD you should give to your dog, based on relative weight.

1. Small (2-15 lbs)

Extra small dogs will need the least amount of CBD, which may sound relieving at first.

But there’s a catch.

Tiny dogs have a super-fast metabolism!

You will need to increase the frequency of CBD administration to 3-4 doses per day, instead of 1 or 2 with larger dogs.

If your dog is suffering from pain, the starting CBD dose of 1 mg may be enough for the beginning.

For behavioral conditions like dogs with anxiety, we recommend measuring out ½ mg worth of oil and adding a couple of drops if you don’t see any improvement for the next 3-5 days of use.

As for a routine, it’s best to start by administering CBD twice daily.

Each time you want to increase the dosage, you can do it in 2 mg increments until your dog finds some relief.

Nevertheless, try not to exceed 15 mg CBD doses in extra small dogs.

Remember that these are all relative figures, and should not be taken as medical advice or as a veterinary recommendation.

2. Medium-Small (15 – 30 lbs)

Having done in-depth research on different CBD dosages for medium dogs, we’ve noticed that many people achieve success with a 2 mg dose, and increasing by 3 mg until they get some results

This data refers to dogs suffering from pain and arthritis.

For psychological conditions and poor appetite, try using half the dose above (1 mg of CBD).

For most medium sized dogs this should do the trick.

Dog owners who want to help their friends with anxiety are recommended to increase doses by no more than 2 mg, keeping mind that they shouldn’t exceed 2 doses per day.

The maximum dose of CBD for a dog of this size is about 20 mg per day.

3. Medium-Large

Like we said before, larger dogs require more CBD to experience the desired effects.

What’s an appropriate initial dose of CBD for dogs with general pain?

It’s generally believed that a 1-3 mg dose of CBD is a good starting point, depending on the level of the pain.

If you’re not seeing the results you want to try increasing by 3 mg.

For behavioral conditions (lack of focus), psychological disorders (panic, anxiety), and poor appetite, the recommended initial dose is 1 mg twice a day.

Make sure to keep a watchful eye on your dog’s behavior to notice if the effects of CBD are kicking in.

If not, increase the dose by no more than 2 mg.

The maximum dose for CBD for a dog of this size is about 30 mg per day.

4. Large (60 – 150 lbs)

Owners of large dogs should follow the same general recommendations as for medium-large dogs.

With very large dogs, you can expect to have a much higher dose, however, it’s best to work your way up slowly by 3 mg per dose until you find signs of relief.

Getting The Dose Right With Different CBD Products

So now that you know the mg of CBD you should use on your dog or cat, you may be wondering how this applies to different CBD products.

After all, not all CBD products contain the same concentration of CBD.

Calculating the right dose of Cannabidiol may look like a cutscene from the “Beautiful Mind” movie, so we’ll help you out a bit.

Below, we share specific details about CBD dosing for dogs using common strengths and volumes.

1. CBD or Hemp Oil

CBD oil for dogs typically comes in 150, 300, and 600 mg bottles. Here are the basic dosage tips for this kind of CBD.

Here’s a quick reference to how the different CBD concentrations work out in drops.

Three Important Considerations

There are three important considerations to have in mind when calculating the CBD dosage for your pet:

  • The CBD product.
  • The CBD product variant.
  • Your dog’s ailment.
1. The CBD Product

Calculating the CBD dosage for your dog depends on the CBD product you choose.

For example, Cannanine CBD is sold in four easy to administer options:

Unlike a CBD cream or CBD itching spray—which are topically applied as needed—liquid and solid CBD products differ in the manner in which the CBD dosage is calculated.

Research shows that orally administered CBD oil tinctures are best absorbed and have higher bioavailability compared to CBD capsules, soft chews treats, creams or sprays.

2. The CBD Product Variant

The CBD product variant is a fancy way of saying, “The sum total of CBD milligrams in a package.”

One brand’s CBD soft chews may contain 2 mg of CBD per soft chew, while its competitors product may contain 5 mg of CBD per soft chew, with each brand having a sum total of 200 mg of CBD per bag of soft chews.

Therefore, although the CBD measuring formulas provided here have Cannanine products in mind, the premise remains the same.

3. Your Dogs Ailment

Your dog’s ailment ultimately determines the strength of CBD you administer.

The CBD dosage you give your dog can be minimum strength, regular (medium), or strong.

The formulas provided in this guide are based on regular strength doses.

The more chronically ill your pet is, the greater the dosage strength you’ll need to use.

A dog receiving chemo might need to use the maximum dosage, therefore, you should adjust the CBD oil dosage depending on the dog’s reaction to the initial dose.

It is always advisable that you start with a conservative dose and increase gradually.

How Much CBD Oil Should I Give My Dog?

As previously stated, CBD oil tincture dosage calculations vary due to CBD potency and packaging.

For example, Cannanine CBD oil is available in 250 mg, 500 mg, and 1000 mg bottles.

It’s not advisable for you to buy your six-pound Chihuahua the 1,000 mg bottle of oil because the CBD potency in each drop—1.68 mg per drop―exceeds the regular dose for a wee Chihuahua.

To give your six-pound Chihuahua a regular strength dose of CBD from a 1,000 mg bottle of CBD oil, you’d need to administer 0.89 drops―less than one drop―or 0.05 ml of CBD oil.

Therefore, the 250 mg bottle―with 0.42 mg per drop―is best suited for a 6 lb dog.

The simple reason being that, when using a dropper, it’s easier to measure a regular dose of 0.17 ml (250 mg) as compared to 0.05 ml (1,000 mg).

Regular Dose Recommendations for CBD Oil Tincture Administration

The regular dose recommendations for CBD oil tincture administration for all dog sizes are as follows.

A regular dose is calculated as: 0.25 mg X 1 lb of body-weight.

Small Dog

For a small dog (under 30 lb – over 60 lb):

  • Use the 250 mg bottle (30 ml/1 fl. oz.).
  • 1 drop = 0.42 mg of CBD per drop.
  • A full dropper (1 ml) contains 20 drops and 8.40 mg of CBD.
Medium-Sized Dog

For a medium dog (under 30 lb – over 75 lb):

  • Use the 500 mg bottle (30 ml/1 fl. oz.).
  • 1 drop = 0.84 mg of CBD per drop.
  • A full dropper (1 ml) contains 20 drops and 16.80 mg of CBD.
Large Dog

For a large dog (60lbs and over):

  • Use the 1000 mg bottle (30 ml/1 fl. oz.).
  • 1 drop = 1.68 mg of CBD per drop.
  • A full dropper (1 ml) contains 20 drops and 33.60 mg of CBD.

Frequently Asked Questions (F.A.Q.)

Can I trust That the Recommended CBD Dosages Are Safe to Give to My Dog?

Yes, you can trust the recommended CBD dosages. Cannanine uses study-based CBD formulas to help you calculate the safest CBD dosage for your dog.

The FDA has not provided regulated doses or standard guidelines for pets.

What Would Happen if My Dog Consumed Too Much CBD?

Please consult your local vet if your dog has consumed too much CBD.

With that said, it’s quite difficult for a dog to overdose on CBD products that are made for pet consumption.

In general, the average dog will experience:

  • Drowsiness and lethargy.
  • Vomiting and or drooling.
  • Frequent urination and thirst.
  • Diarrhea.

Nutritious food, lots of rest, and plenty of liquids (electrolyte replacement) should restore your dog to excellent health.

Will CBD Products Make My Dog High?

No, CBD products won’t make your dog high because most hemp oil CBD products for pets contain less than 0.3% tetrahydrocannabinol (T.H.C.).

T.H.C., the psychoactive compound that causes intoxication is toxic to dogs.

Unlike other CBD brands, Cannanine products are incredibly pure and are 100% THC-free, that is, without any trace amounts of T.H.C.

Why Use CBD for Dogs?

CBD for dogs is often recommended as a helpful therapy to treat arthritis, epileptic seizures, extreme anxiety, joint inflammation, to alleviate severe pain and minor aches, boost immune function, and more.

Basic CBD dosage rule for all pets

Determining the appropriate dosage of CBD for your pet may take some trial and error. From the frequency to the amount, dosages can vary depending on the situation. Before starting your pet on CBD Oil or other products you should check packaging to see what the recommended dosage is. In addition, you should find out the concentration level of the particular product. Keep in mind, the concentration level on the packaging or bottle is usually for the entire bottle, not per dose. Therefore, you may need to do a little math to determine how much CBD is in each dose. If you purchase a CBD product specifically for pets the instructions should be more friendly and helpful for determining appropriate dosage. CBD may take about 30-45 minutes to take effect. After giving your pet a dose of CBD you should monitor behavior and watch them closely. Since your pet can’t talk to you you will need to use your intuition to determine if they need a lesser or greater dosage. Alternatively, if your pet has any negative side effects you will want to consult a veterinarian.

How Much CBD Oil Should I Give My Dog?

CBD Oil dosage can vary depending on several factors. With limited research for CBD Oil and dogs, you will need to do a little research and trial and error to come up with the proper dosage. All dogs and animals are unique and may have different reactions. One dosage may work for one dog, yet it may not work for another. There is no one-size-fits-all solution for CBD dosages. In fact, there is not even a one-size-fits-one-dog solution. You may start your dog on one dosage and soon after find you need to adjust the dosage. Anytime you are giving your dog new products or treatments you need to keep a close eye on them to make sure they respond positively. Cannanine offers a line of CBD Oil specifically for dogs. Product recommendations and dosage can vary depending on the size of your dog. Cannanine CBD Oil product recommendations per the size of your dog are listed below:

  • Small dog (under 30lb-over 60lb): Cannanine 250MG
  • Medium dog (under 30lb-over 75lb): Cannanine 500MG
  • Large dog (60lbs and over): Cannanine 1000MG

To determine the appropriate dosage you will need to know exactly how much your dog weighs. Let’s say your dog weighs 20lbs. For a dog that weighs 20lbs you will want to order the 250MG bottle. From there the dosage formula is as follows:

  • 20lb x .25MG = 5MG
  • 1 drop in a 250MG bottle contains 0.42MG CBD
  • 5MG/0.42MG/drop = 11.90 drops

Now let’s say you have a medium sized dog that weighs 60lbs. You will want to purchase the 500MG bottle. From there the dosage formula is as follows:

  • 60lb x .25MG = 15MG
  • 1 drop in a 500MG bottle contains 0.84MG CBD
  • 15MG/0.84/drop = 17.86 drops

CBD dosage for dogs with anxiety

Before treating a dog with anxiety, you should first determine if they have anxiety. If you determine that your dog does have anxiety, CBD Oil may help calm them down and alleviate symptoms. As with any condition, CBD dosage is typically determined by the concentration, weight of the dog, and other factors. CBD can increase serotonin levels in the brain which can help reduce anxiety. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that can alter mood. While there are no studies linking CBD as an effective treatment for dogs with anxiety, research has shown that it can reduce anxiety in humans, mice, and rats. Some signs that your dog may be suffering from anxiety include:

  • Excessive barking (especially when left alone)
  • Chewing or damaging furniture and other items
  • Digging outside
  • Excessive urination
  • Lack of appetite
  • Shivering
  • Trying to escape on a regular basis
  • Biting, itching, or licking in excess

CBD dosage for cancer in dogs

If your dog has been diagnosed with cancer, you may be desperately searching for ways to help them. Even if you don’t win the battle with cancer, you may be able to extend your dog’s life with treatment. If you proceed with chemotherapy or other official treatments, there may be severe side effects from the treatment itself. Many dog owners that have dogs with cancer turn to CBD products to alleviate some of the symptoms of cancer and treatment. Dogs with cancer may be in an especially fragile state so you will want to ensure you give them a proper dosage of CBD. To determine a proper dosage of CBD for dogs with cancer, you will need to weigh your dog. Next, you will need to select a CBD product and use the concentration to calculate an appropriate dosage. The manufacturer should provide instructions to help you calculate an appropriate dosage.

CBD dosage for dogs with seizures

It’s common to give CBD to dogs that suffer from seizures. Whether your dog is having subtle or severe seizures, CBD may be able to help. As with other conditions, there is a lack of studies proving that CBD can help. However, there are plenty of veterinarians and dog owners that have experimented with CBD treatment. Over the years, CBD has been used to treat dogs and people with seizures. There have been some great successes and some not-so-great successes. If your dog is suffering from seizures you should at least try CBD products. To determine the appropriate dosage you should check with the manufacturer.
