After reviewing film of the Masters, a number of golf fans have been speculating Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson were both putting with a variant of cannabis in their systems at the Masters.
In Woods’ case, the theory is the gum he was constantly chewing at the tournament contained CBD (cannabidiol), which is extracted from hemp or marijuana plants but doesn’t get you high. “Fans think that he may have been chewing CBD to help calm his nerves or possibly to reduce pain,” Vapor Vanity writes.
“Well, I’m chomping on this gum because I usually get hungry, I keep eating so much,” Woods explained. “And it curbs my appetite a little bit, which is nice.” (If they gum actually did contain CBD, apparently it isn’t the munchies-causing variety.)
As for Mickelson — who says he chews gum to stimulate his frontal cortex — a number of fans speculated he was using CBD oil after he was caught on camera ingesting something from an eyedropper.
Whether they were or not, it is not against PGA Tour rules to do so, according to Golf Digest.
“CBD oil shouldn’t trigger a positive result on a drug test, which could get a professional in hot water with his or her tour,” the publication reports. “Users say CBD reduces inflammation, improves sleep and, yes, calms the nerves.”
As Golf Digest points out, Colorado-based CBD firm Functional Remedies has already signed Champions Tour player Scott McCarron as an endorser.
